RARE RUSSIAN ICON WITH SILVER OKLAD SHOWING ST. NICHOLAS ON YAROSLAV’S COURT AND THE LEGEND OF THE ICON
Silver oklad: St. Petersburg , around 1825, assay master: Alexander Yashinov (1795-1826). master’s mark: probaly Ivan Philippovich Philippov, 35,8 x 30,8 cm // Lit: Palekh Icons, The Enchantment of Russian Painting, Museum of Russian Icons, Clinton, Mass., 2012, S. 24f. // In the center of this very rare icon is a medallion surrounded by four cherubim. The cicumscribed text declares, ‘the representation and likeness of the miraculous icon of St. Nicholas that is located in Yaroslav’s Court in Great Novgorod.’ The four scenes around the center tell the legend of the icon.
